East Village

The East Village is a neighborhood in the borough of Manhattan in New York City which lies east of Greenwich Village, south of Gramercy  north of the Lower East Side. Within the East Village are several smaller neighborhoods, including Alphabet City, and Union Square

The area was once generally considered to be part of the Lower East Side, but began to develop its own identity and culture in the 1960s, when many artists, musicians, students and hippies began to move into the area, attracted by cheap rents

The East Village is still known for its diverse community, vibrant nightlife and artistic sensibility. The Union Square area is very desirable and prices are amongst the highest in the city.  Many top name fashion stores are in the area as well as well known art supply stores.  Whole Foods and Trader Joes are also located in this area.  Farmer's Markets provide a wide range of organic and fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers, cheeses, baked goods and meats throughout the season. Craft shows also are scheduled at various times during the year.

Some of the best restaurants, cafes and clubs also fill the area.

Alphabet City remains a quieter section of the East Village primarily inhabited by families and young professionals. Many families have lived there for several generations and a strong feeling of community surrounds the area.  Many smaller artistic shops, restaurants and cafes fill the streets bringing new life and a certain flavor to the area.
